I was a six-going-on-seven year old, artistic and curious
Who had a simple life and loved riding my big wheel. When my mother and I left Fort Wayne, Indiana for Chicago, Illinois my life took a turn that would forever change me. In my book, this is the point of my life that you meet LaSonia.
The journey was crossed with moments of homelessness and hunger. For months I wasn’t in school and living in various places until finally landing in the housing projects. I was the kid that didn’t fit in. I began to feel unwanted and unworthy of love. Life drove me deeper into my art. Being an artist has given me a way to explore and express, I'm grateful for it.
The reason I wrote Validation was to show that despite all you may go through, move forward in life. Memories from a complicated past can be painful, and can numb us as we attempt to bury our feelings. It is when we face our past that we realize what was gained. Empathy, strength, courage, compassion, love, understanding, gratitude, these come from within and validates how strong we truly are.
Validation is written in my love language, art. I want to show that even in the ugly moments, there is even more beauty in life. This artistic memoir assembles decades of art and poetry as a remedy of reflection, self-love, and courage.
